Masato Kato

From FFXI Wiki
Masato Kato

Masato Kato (加藤 正人, M. Kato, Runmai) got his start in the video game industry with Tecmo working on Captain Tsubasa and the original Ninja Gaiden series. For the first game, he contributed graphics, animations, and instruction manual illustrations. His roles increased in responsibility there until the third game, where he served as Director and writer.

Kato then worked with Gainax on the video game adaption of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and Princess Maker 2.

Kato then began work for Square Enix with Chrono Trigger, where he wrote the main story based on Yuji Hori's basic plot outline. Kato's work on the game would have qualified him as a Director, but he was a new employee and getting a Director credit them would have been improper. He designed the system of multiple endings, contributed to the character designs, and wrote entire new portions of the game Hori had not laid out.

Kato then went to work on Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Radical Dreamers (the original Chrono Trigger sequel), and Xenogears prior to work on Final Fantasy XI.

For FFXI, Kato was credited as the Plot / Events Supervisor for the base version of the game. He left Square as an employee after finishing work on Rise of the Zilart, where he wrote the main scenario.

He returned to FFXI to write the 3 addon scenarios A Crystalline Prophecy, A Moogle Kupo d'Etat, and A Shantotto Ascension.
