Mordion Gaol
Purpose
Mordion Gaol is an area used by the Game Master staff as a "jail" to hold the characters of players who are or are suspected of violating the PlayOnline TOS or Rules of Conduct—thus becoming a possible danger to other players. To report violations or contact a Game Master (or GM for short) one should use Help Desk
GMs may also use this room as a place to talk to players who have problems or who report violations. For players in this zone, all out-going messages can be restricted by the GM, including /tell, /linkshell or /linkshell2, and party chat. It is important to note that PlayOnline messages are not restricted while in this area
Only a GM may move a character into Mordion Gaol (usually accompanied by an animation-less teleport). No sort of items are available for use while a player is in this area nor can magic be cast (I don't recall if job abilities can be used or not). Only a GM may remove a character from Mordion Gaol under normal circumstances and teleport them somewhere else in the world (If they were in violation of the rules it will always be their Home Point).
When a character has arrived in Mordion Gaol, the GM will explain the violation committed and mete further punishment if necessary. Severe or repeated violations will result in suspension; when a player is suspended, their character will remain held in this area for a period of Earth time that the GM staff determines appropriate. Multiple instances of misconduct leading to suspension (usually around 4) here will result in the player's complete removal from the current World, or even Final Fantasy XI itself with playonline giving an LM-17 message when attempting to connect to that character.
In an effort to minimize their workload, a GM has authority to warp players out of Mordion Gaol and return them to their home point in severe cases of misconduct in which the player will be punished with a suspension period deemed appropriate by the GM staff. The purpose of this jail release is that when a player becomes suspended, they no longer have the option to log back online; furthermore, upon completion of the suspension period, a player used to wait for a period of time in Mordion Gaol until a GM was available to release them. With this update to the Terms of Service, additional waiting periods similar to this one, and the additional assistance from a GM for jail removal, are no longer necessary.
To the player, the area appears as a single large, square room, with an arch on the north wall leading into a shallow alcove. The zone itself, however, consists of 32 of these cells spread out so that they are just out of /shouting distance. Its level elements are identical to the main sections of Inner Horutoto Ruins.
Notes
- Mordion Gaol is utilized by the Game Masters (GMs) in FFXI. It can be used to punish players, or to question them, etc.
- Visually it looks just like the zone Inner Horutoto Ruins, which is perhaps a reference to how that dungeon is used as a prison for certain characters in the storyline. The area itself is simply a small confined room.
- Perhaps Strangely, the game considers this to be part of the Qufim region, though it will not appear in the menu or be searchable by region or zone name without having been there yourself.
- Any and all attempts to escape whether by warp, teleport, or death, result in a message (if you can even use it - most things are blocked) that says: "Any attempt at escape is futile!"
- This includes death by dots such as poison and bio and Prime Equipment. Some changes have happened in the distant past. While you cannot even use a poison potion, having low HP and dot already on you prior to being jailed used to make the GM have to re-jail you. Now if you actually die you spawn back in Mordion regardless of homepoint location while getting the above message.
