During a roundtable interview with fansites during the week of Fan Festival 2008, the devs answered the question again.
Online Welten: Will summoners ever get a new summon?
A: In the not so far future, yes, you can expect one. They are working on two possible pets. One of them is going to be very big.
2016
During the 2016 Reddit AMA, Akihiko Matsui and Yujo Fujito were asked if there were plans for Siren to become an avatar.
Q: Is it possible for Siren to become a summon-able avatar like Alexander/Odin?
A: This is not possible. We originally had plans to have Siren be an avatar; however, we ended up introducing her as a character in Rhapsodies of Vana’diel, and since she was so tied to the story we decided not to use her as an avatar in the end.
