The dye is known as carmine, and it actually comes from the cochineal insect, which lives on nopales (prickly pear cactus). The cochineal look like spots of white mildew on the cactus, but when you touch the spots they become a bright red liquid.--Egagropila (talk) 01:37, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
