Style

One of my current concerns is the overall style of the BG Wiki. While i do understand the fact that a wiki is supposed to be rooted in information and usability over style, I certainly feel that all three can be combined effectively. When compared to the FFXI wiki hosted by Wiki, the BG Wiki is sorely lacking in style and usability. This is obviously, of course, a matter of money and sponsorship. The BG Wiki has no corporate sponsor; it remains fan created, fan run, and fan supported. The same way the BG Forums represents a large portion of endgame players, so should the wiki represent their knowledge and in-game foci. It should also represent the fact that this wiki is maintained out of a passion for the game, something the “other wiki” can no longer claim. That passion, I feel, should integrated into every aspect of this wiki. This wiki does not need to be limited by “official” materials. Of course all the information found within will be accurate and exacting, but that doesn’t mean the presentation has to be devoid of creativity.

Objective

In this space I’ll be testing out some new styles for pages, ones that push the limits of what’s really available in the wiki format, which is sorely limited. I’ll also be intentionally breaking “established” wiki rules for the sake of style and creativity, just to see how things could look if we decided to look past just what’s shown to us and really attempt to bring some of our second home to life.

This is a challenging project, mostly because of the limited code that is available when creating a page for the wiki. Fortunately I’m well versed in how to twist limitations to my liking and have an extensive understanding of coding, styles, and how to make the two work together.

Taste on the other hand, is purely subjective.

Subjects

For my experiments I’ll be using the San d’Orian Campaign Generals. They’re the current focus of my interest and I feel that the bland NPC template doesn’t do them the proper justice. The Campaign Generals aren’t simply static NPCs. They’re active, “living”, personable characters. They inspire loyalty, bravery, and passion on their battlefields and I’ll attempt to bring that through in the profiles I create for them.

Each General is unique in all aspects and each has his or her own story to tell.

Closing

Campaign, particularly San d’Oria, is my passion. I will continue my work on all the current wiki entries for Campaign related factions as I work on these new style experiments. The more I learn about The Crystal War Era and its inhabitants, the more passionate I become about telling their stories. My research has given me new direction in FFXI and I can’t wait to see how these stories unfold.

There is still a lot to learn.
