• In Icelandic folklore, the Hrosshvalur (loosely translated to "Horse-whale") is among the most dangerous Icelandic illhveli, or "evil whales." They grew to 15 to 40 meters in length, had a red mane, horse's tail, were covered in fine fur elsewhere, and smelled horribly. They had a call that sounded like a horse neighing.
  
  The Hrosshvalur delighted in destroying ships. Sailors would see the red mane just above the water on their high speed approach. The Hrosshvalur would then jump onto the ship, causing it to capsize. They are said to have the ability to cause huge waves by just whipping their tails.
