Lore
Volte, from the Italian word "Volgere" (to turn) and "Volta" (a turn), originated in the late 17th century as a fencing term in France. Where-in a foot movement of a sudden quick jump or other movement to escape a thrust from your opponent is performed; especially that of a swinging round of the rear leg to turn the body sideways.
The move is an esquive (a dodge), in which a thrusting counter-attack is mounted with your right foot foremost while thrusting to step behind and forward of your right foot with your left. This move will turn your chest away to the left from your opponent, and if performed correctly will show your back to them. [1]
The term is also used in dressage (horse ballet) in which a horse moves in a circle of 6 yards in diameter.
This dual usage of the word dates back to the early 18th century. [2]
