Primary method of acquisition is from light based, Experience Points yielding monsters while under one of: Signet, Sanction, Sigil, or Ionis effects.
Also obtained from participating in Monstrosity.
Can be obtained from Gardening and Chocobo Digging.
Usage: Crystals are mainly used in the Synthesis system. Another use for them is fertilization in Gardening.
Traded in exchange for 80 Kinetic Units each. Kinetic Units are used in conjunction with Waypoints and Proto-Waypoints.
Also used for the Escutcheon questline in conjunction with the Synthesis Focuser II to perform Synthchains.
