Monster Rearing is a feature of the Mog Gardens in which players can raise their own creatures from babe to brute. Revel in the joys of feeding time as you laugh, cry, and bond with your bestial buddies.

As they grow, watch them metamorphose into majestic creatures. Adventurers can even receive certain items from their charges, but the beasts will be less willing to part with anything of note should they be dissatisfied with their lot.

Eligibility

  • Have all gathering locations at a combined total ranking of twenty or higher (Possible with Rank 4 grove, vein and pond, rank 3 furrow and rank 5 coastal net, for example)
  • Have employed the assistant Susuroon at least once

Starting Out

Adventurers, who have fulfilled the above conditions, can speak to the Green Thumb Moogle to begin a line of quests in which a Qiqirn named Chacharoon will visit their Mog Garden. See below for the quest line and details on completing these quests. After the third quest in the line is complete, Chacharoon will serve as the liaison between adventurers and their monsters.

Chacharoon's Options

New Creature

Allows raising a new monster up to the player's current rank. See the Monster Selection & Mementos table below. More monster types become available as the player increases the monster rearing rank.

Parenting Styles

Adult monsters can potentially grow until they reach a 3 star ranking. At this point, parenting styles will no longer have an effect on mood or growth. However, they can still prevent natural evolution.

  • "Personal growth."
    • The creature will gradually mature over time, but their mood will gradually degrade.
    • By default a new monster will be set to the Personal Growth parental style.
  • "Enjoying the moment."
    • The creature's maturity and mood will remain constant unless the player feeds or interacts with it. This will also prevent a monster from evolving naturally over time.
      • For monsters that evolve naturally, this gives time to pursue alternate evolution with food.
      • Can also be used to keep/lock a naturally evolving baby monster at stage one.

Saying Goodbye

When you decide your partnership with your dear monster has reached the end of the line you may part with it in two ways:

  • "Send It Back Home."
  • "Put It Down."
    • This will earn you two items from that monsters collect items pool plus an additional "Put down" item.
  • Growth and time affect the items received from this option.

Rearing Priority

While raising multiple monsters, this allows choosing which monster will appear in the main Mog Garden area.

Cheering Effect & Mementos

Obtaining rank 2 with the Key Item "Sakura and the Magic Spoon" and the quest Chacharoon's Cheer allows selecting a cheer from unlocked "memento" Key Items obtained while raising monsters. There will be a shining star cost to change to a different effect.

There is a chance you may obtain a memento each day from caring for your creature. The chance increases the bigger the monster grows. While a monster is under the "beaming with pure contentment" mood, the monster will always reward you with the corresponding cheer Key Item memento upon collecting items from it, and any interaction that "strongly resonates" with it will also give the memento.

Upon obtaining a monster's memento Key Item, purchasable items become available at the Green Thumb Moogle's shop, according to the Monster Selection & Mementos table below.

Caring for Monsters

You should always pet your little lamb.

Once per day, the player may interact with the monster, feed the monster, and collect items from it. The player can also repeatedly check the monster's mood and growth level.

Monster Mood

A monsters mood score is measured by an irregular scale; with "succumbing to darkness" as the most negative mood and "beaming with pure contentment" as the most positive.

Generally, interacting and feeding tend to affect mood in either a positive or neutral manner. However, collecting items from monsters always decreases mood, except during times when a monster is "beaming with pure contentment."

Mood Special Effects

  • "beaming with pure contentment"
    • An interaction that "strongly resonates" with a monster will reward Shining Stars.
    • A monster's memento Key Item will always be given upon collecting items from it.
  • two or more monsters "beaming with pure contentment"
    • Entering the Mog Garden for the first time in the day awards an extra Shining Star. The status is removed after a day has passed.
  • "succumbed to darkness"
    • Renders all Mog Garden nodes inoperable, barring the Flotsam node.
    • A monster in this mood must be dealt with by either:
      • Using "moogle magic" to improve the monster's mood, which uses a variable number of Shining Stars, with the number of stars needed increasing upon each use.
      • Putting down the monster.

Evolution

Feeding the monster anything causes it to grow. Some foods, however, cause the monster to grow in an irregular manner, resulting in a variant of the normal "adult form" for most monsters and even further evolution, such as in the case of the Sheep family.

When feeding a "starter-tier" monster, with ★☆• stars, with a food that changes its evolution, the message "MONSTER squirms uncontrollably" is given to indicate that the monster has a chance to evolve depending on the food that was fed. If instead you see a message "MONSTER shudders violently." then the monster has evolved, and simply zoning will cause the change in the monster to occur. Zoning between Mog Garden zones will not suffice.

Sometimes monsters may be stubborn and you must simply keep trying every day. It is not uncommon for an eligible monster to take weeks to finally evolve.

Evolution Exceptions

The sheep, crab, slime, dragon hatchling, behemoth, cactus, mandragora, dhalmel and ferromantoise monsters require ★★☆ (2.5) stars before they will evolve.

HNM-Tier pop item foods will always cause monsters to evolve as long as the star requirements are met. (For example: Savory Shank.) HNM-Tier meats such as Behemoth Meat and Gabbrath Meat do not behave in this manner.

 • Indicates a 0 More growth is possible. ☆ Indicates a 0.5 and ★ indicates a 1 in the monsters current growth level.

Feed Bonuses

While wearing the Jubilee Shirt, monsters gain twice the amount of growth progress per feeding. This is currently the only known item that offers this benefit.

  • Feeding and Collecting have no bearing on ranking up. It is based solely on "Times Cared for a creature" (Green Thumb Moogle -> "Learn about the garden." -> "Tidbits of information.") Interactions such as pet, yell, poke, stare, etc are the only thing that matters.
    • At rank 1, you can "Pet" 1 animal, release the pet and get 1 more, and "Pet" them. This allows for 2 "pets" a day.
    • At rank 3, you can "Pet" 2 animals, release 1 of them and get 1 more, and "Pet" them. This allows for 3 "pets" a day.
    • At rank 5, you can "Pet" 3 animals, release 2 of them and get 2 more, and "Pet" them. This allows for 5 "pets" a day, making rank 5->6 and 6->7 only take 4 days per rank instead of 7. You will get no "cheers", but will rank up faster.

Monthly Adventurer Campaigns

There are two campaigns that may run any given month:

Mog Gardens Campaign

Monster Breeding / Rearing Campaign

  • When this Monthly Adventurer Campaign is active, it is easier to evolve monsters.
    • Monsters that you are rearing are simply twice as likely to evolve. Normal food requirements for evolution, as well as feeding procedures are still in effect.
