Talk:Endgame Progression Guide
Had a complaint from a newer player regarding recommended trusts. They were wondering why Trion was absolute garbage and Valaineral was better, when your guide recommends the opposite.
Trion is mostly an upgraded version of Valaineral - he has solid defenses, uses curative magic, holds hate well, and will even attempt to interrupt enemy TP moves using Shield Bash. He also has two defensive Weapon Skills, meaning he'll be less likely to interrupt skillchains. He doesn't have any AOE skills, so if you're trying to farm large groups then Valaineral may still be the better choice.
I am assuming this information is from before the update to AAEV and Valaineral which occurred years ago. An adjustment to this would be easy and improve the quality of your guide. Hya (talk) 00:41, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- They could always just try the trusts instead of being blind. If they skip a trust because of the guide then they wanted to skip it anyway and it is moot. --Spicyryan (talk) 13:33, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Is the purpose of a guide not to help players from having to go in blind? This specific individual did end up figuring things out on their own, but their question of why the information in the guide was misleading remains valid. There are what, ~100 trusts, 95% of which are nearly useless or extremely niche. I wouldn't expect someone to try them all out, because I sure haven't. Recommending Trion over Valaineral in 2024 is like recommending Head Butt over Sudden Lunge. One is objectively better than the other for every use case. Hya (talk) 14:45, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah the intention of the guide is indeed to help new players and not mislead them, apologies to them if this caused any trouble. I had indeed had good success with using Trion compared to Val...before the Val update, and was mostly recommending him based off that. I'll adjust the description in the guide based on your friend's feedback, thanks for the heads-up! If they have any other feedback, I'd be happy to hear it. --Cassiani (talk) 15:19, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
Would you be open to making this guide a Collaborative Community Guide?
This is an excellent guide.
We are in the process of replacing Spicy's Quickstart 119 guide. I'm interested in directing players to your Endgame Progression Guide to replace the content that was in the second half of the Quickstart 119 Guide.
Would you be interested in this guide converting to a Community Collaborative Guide and becoming part of the replacement for Spicy's Quickstart 119 guide? -- Alexeina (talk) 02:24, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yup, that's fine with me, I'm happy to help my guide reach more eyes! What did you have in mind for incorporating this into the new guide? Cassiani (talk) 14:06, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
Wonderful. I'll work on that tomorrow. -- Alexeina (talk) 04:11, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
Were this to be implemented into a new player guide, I would recommend that the order in which content is presented be highly scrutinized. For instance, recommending Master Levels before even entering Sheol A seems like a recipe for disaster. There also is absolutely no information regarding introductory Sortie solo and low-man runs, much less higher end farming. The number one thing I mention when linking this to new/returning players is that they should not necessarily try to do things in order as suggested. FFXI's lack of linearity is one of its finer points, but it also makes a guide like this challenging to write. Hya (talk) 00:16, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah I'm not necessarily sure it should be INCLUDED into a new player guide - the experience of going 1-99 is vastly different from doing endgame content, and much of this information won't be relevant for dozens / hundreds of hours. I have unfortunately not gotten to writing sections on Sortie yet, though it is on the top of my to-do list. I struggled to figure out where to include Master Levels, where do you think would be a better place to include them? While the endgame is very non-linear, I do want players to be able to roughly follow the order of things in the guide - if you have suggestions for how to re-arrange the sections, I'd be glad to hear them!
