Category:Treasure Coffer
Treasure Coffers are a type of Treasure Chest. Players commonly refer to these chests as "Coffers". They are mainly found within Dungeons in the game. They were first implemented in the November 26th, 2002 version update.
Opening a Treasure Coffer
The most common way of opening a Treasure Coffer is with it's corresponding "Coffer Key". A coffer key is unique to a dungeon, and cannot be used in a different dungeon than it is named for.
To open a coffer, you must stand incredibly close to it in a dungeon. You must either "use" they key from your inventory, or Trade it to the Treasure Coffer in the Trade menu. Be careful, as Invisible (Status) cannot be used when opening a Treasure Coffer. Additionally, Sneak (Status) and Deodorize both are lost upon successfully opening a Treasure Coffer. Finally, if you are Weakened, you cannot open a Treasure Coffer.
All Coffer Keys can be found dropped from monsters that are level 59~76. . The drop rate ranges from VR ~ R, and does increase with Treasure Hunter traits to roughly around a U.
- Note that if you possess the
"Rhapsody in Umber", all keys can be purchased from a Curio Vendor Moogle. This is the typical way players now open Coffers, unless they happen to come across a key by defeating a monster by luck.
Keys List
For convenience, below is a list of every Coffer Key and it's corresponding zone where the Treasure Coffer spawns that it can open.
Opening a Coffer as Thief
Thieves are the only job that can open a Treasure Coffer without a key, and must also be set as a Main Job. To do this, one of the following consumable items are required:
This process sometimes fails, and is not guaranteed. If this fails, Weakness will be placed upon the Thief anywhere from 5 minutes to 2~3 hours. Weakness duration applied in this method varies, possibly relating to the difference between the Thief's level and the content level of the dungeon (more about this below). Unlike Treasure Chests, Coffers also have a chance to trigger a Mimic trap instead.
The success rate on unlocking Treasure Coffers depends on the dungeon. Each dungeon has a "reference level for unlocking". When this level and the level of the Thief are the same, there is a 70% chance of success. If the Thief is lower than the "reference level for unlocking", the success rate will decrease by 5% per level.
While Weakened, you can not unlock Treasure Coffers. This includes both methods: Coffer Keys and Lockpicking.
If you are attempting to open a Treasure Coffer, and are not flagged to receive Artifact Armor or a Key Item. There is a small chance that you will receive the message "The chest was but an illusion..." and it will despawn immediately.
Location
It is important to note that Treasure Coffers have designated spawn locations within a dungeon that they appear. It is beneficial to look at the Zone page maps to see designated locations where a Treasure Coffer can spawn.
■ The pink/red colored dots on our maps are a potential spawn location of a Treasure Coffer.
As of the December 9th, 2008 version update Coffers now respawn every 5 minutes after being opened.
- Upon first implementation, Treasure Coffers used to take between 16~60 minutes to respawn.
Treasure Coffer Contents
- Magical Maps
- In the past, Treasure Coffers were the only way of obtaining maps of certain zones. Now, all maps can be purchased by Map Vendor NPCs. If you have not purchased the map from an NPC or obtained it from a quest, and the map is one that comes from a coffer you are opening, you are G guaranteed to obtain the zone's map as a priority when opening a coffer and no other quests are active.
- Some zone maps also come from Treasure Chests.

- Artifact Armor if the player meets the prerequisites to obtain such armor.
- If the player who opens the Coffer is on the appropriate Artifact Armor quest, and is on the corresponding job that can equip it.
- Quest or Mission specific items/key items.
- Only if the player who opens the Coffer is on a correct quest/mission.
- Gil
- Gil rewards are split evenly between the entire Alliance.
- The amount of Gil obtained increases for each member of a party, up to a maximum of 3. Any more people than 3 in a party results in the same amount of Gil.
- Trust Magic counts as a real player in this case. It is recommended to summon Trusts before opening a coffer.
- Scrolls or Equipment
- Only two scrolls come from Treasure Coffers, but one cannot be obtained from other sources.
- Burst from Beadeaux has many other sources, but Mage's Ballad II only comes from Coffers in Castle Zvahl Baileys.
- Only two pieces of equipment (that are not Artifact Armor) come from Treasure Coffers.
- The Safeguard Ring is obtained from Castle Oztroja, and the Physical Earring is from Monastic Cavern.
- Only two scrolls come from Treasure Coffers, but one cannot be obtained from other sources.
When opening a Treasure Coffer while in a party, and when the result is not Artifact Armor, the treasure is placed inside of a parties treasure pool.
