General Notes
|
|
- Susceptible to
Slashing damage and extremely resistant to other damage types.
- Basic Attacks
- Normal auto-attacks are chosen from one of three types:
- Bite: Single target physical damage, Defense Down (-20%)
- Charge: Frontal AoE physical damage, Stun, heavy knockback
- Spin: AoE physical damage, light knockback
- Blistering Roar will grant Kalunga an aura and spawn fetters. Kalunga's weakness must be targeted in order to remove them.
- A 2-step skillchain will trigger the
Red weakness and open the window for a subsequent Blue weakness.
- Extending the skillchain to a 3-step will trigger the
Blue weakness and despawn fetters.
- Subsequent Blue weaknesses will require an additional step to trigger.
- During its aura Kalunga absorbs fire damage, thus a Fusion or Light skillchain will heal it.
- At 75% HP, Kalunga will use
Brazen Rush
- In the Vengeance 20 version of the fight, an additional monster will spawn when boss is at 75% HP: Kalunga's Matamata.
- In the Vengeance 25 version of the fight, an additional monster will spawn when boss is at 40% HP: Kalunga's Matamata.
- Recommended Vengeance 20 accuracy is ~1,241.

Gravity & Kite Strategy
Party Setup BRD COR RDM SCH WAR PLD
- BRD
- Honor March, Valor Minuet V, Valor Minuet IV, Dirge, Mage's Ballad III on WAR (for Schere Earring hate), Valor Minuet III on RDM COR BRD. PLD stands apart from group after receiving dummy songs, and PLD gets March, Mage's Ballad III, Fire Carol, Fire Carol II, and Foe Sirvente. Join the DDs and follow Kalunga and spam Savage Blade (is this correct that BRD engages as well?).
- COR
- RDM
- SCH
- Regen, buffing at start (Shell V), main heal, and be especially cautious with heals after the add pops. Caper Emissarius around 50-75% on the PLD to help with hate.
- WAR
- Follow Kalunga and spam Savage Blade. Call out to COR for Random Deal and Wild Card as needed. Do damage and try not to die to the add as the RDM gets it under control.
- PLD
- Start with 3k TP in the lobby. Majesty Protect V on the party. Run away from group after receiving dummy songs, BRD will buff you separately. Crusade & Phalanx. Engage Kalunga with Shield Bash, Atonement, and Divine Seal Flash. Start kiting around the upstairs platform. When the add pops, kite Kalunga downstairs. Keep yourself healed while staying just under/at 21’ to keep fetters away from everyone but still generate hate. Spam Flash, cures, and JAs as much as possible to maintain enmity. With multiple forms of refresh from RDM and BRD, MP should not be an issue even when spamming cures.
Gear Benchmarks and Examples

- WAR

- PLD
- The below set is an example of a gearset that works, but I'm sure other options would work fine. You want DT, HP, Magic Evasion, Magic Defense Bonus, Status Resist+, and INT/MND in your kite/idle set. But, because you are kiting, the foremost challenge in this strategy is not survival. Your primary responsibility is keeping hate off your party members as they follow Kalunga around, savage blading at will. So, you will need a very good enmity set that swaps in for JA, Flash, and at least partially for cures, as those are your primary means of keeping hate in this fight. See my enmity set below.
- Movement speed+ gear is not required because Kalunga should have Gravity on, in addition to frequent stops to cast or use some JA. In fact, you'll likely have to stop and wait for him to keep him within the 21'.
- I’m sure the PLD could have gotten by without Burtgang, especially since you take very little physical damage with the kiting method. The additional enmity from Atonement and the sword's base enmity, though, could have played an important factor in keeping hate off the DDs, so Burtgang is preferred. If you had to choose another option, I would look at the Malignance Sword, Sakpata's Sword, and possibly even Brilliance for the enmity.
- As always with PLD sets, make sure to keep your HP high throughout all sets, even cures and JA swaps. Likewise, do not drop capped DT, even if it means losing some Fast Cast or Cure Potency. The Platinum Moogle Belt is a lifesaver for balancing HP across sets, as are the Path C Souveran pieces. Odyssey fights can be unpredictable, so be sure you are not caught in too much subpar FC+ or Phalanx+ gear at any point.
- Must have:
- Aegis (Level 99). Kalunga can deal a significant amount of magic damage, but with MDT overcapped with gear and Aegis (Level 99), you should hardly notice it. Don’t take this shield off during the fight.
- Shadow Ring. 12% chance of annulling magic damage.
- Warder's Charm +1. Elemental resistance and 5% chance of annulling magic damage.
