Attachments

Attachments
Automatons may be equipped with attachments which boost and augment their capabilities. Initially received as items, they must be traded to equip in the automaton equipment menu. Once traded they can not be turned back into items.

While your main job is Puppetmaster (Any job will work now) speak with Tateeya in the Automaton Workshop iat (I-7) in Aht Urhgan Whitegate then trade her the attachments. Don't worry as she won't take an attachment that you have already traded before.

  • After the initial dialogue you may trade attachments on any job.

Combat Skills and Stats

Automaton Base Stats
Changing heads will not affect the automaton's HP, MP or base stats like Strength, but it might raise one of its combat skills to the next "tier."
For instance, equipping Valoredge frame, with a base melee skill of 404, or B+, with the Valoredge head raises it from B+ to A, 417 at level 99.

Frames

Frame Elemental Capacity
Every automaton frame and head has a different elemental capacity. This allows for attachments to be used with an automaton up until the elemental cost of the attachments has met or would surpass the capacity of the head and frame chosen.
Elemental capacity of automatons may be expanded by up to four of each element from Puppetmaster Gifts.

Information on how to acquire these frames is available at Puppet Frame Creation.

Combat Parameters

Combat Parameters
An automaton's AI resides in each of its heads. Changing frames around with heads not only potentially changes combat skills, but the behavior of the puppet itself.
In contrast, the damage types and weapon skills of an automaton reside within the frame.

The casting of all spells have their own timer. Each head has its own individual recast for categories of magic such as healing or nuking. As of the December 2011 update there is no longer a universal casting delay that needs to pass before a spell may be cast.

The casting priority also changes based on the type of maneuver that is up and the foes HP as well as the HP of the master and then the automaton.
For example using a light maneuver alters the casting priority of an automaton by forcing cure over casting to remove status ailments. Furthermore, equipping an attachment such as the Damage Gauge also raises the threshold of when cure will trigger on the casting priority. Automatons prioritize the casting of certain spells like cure or regen based off of who has hate.
